POSITION SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE

We are currently seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our finance team. This role involves a broad range of accounting duties, including maintaining the general ledger, reconciling bank accounts, managing accounts receivable and payable, and supporting the annual audit process. The successful candidate will ensure accurate financial reporting and control procedures, and provide support to employees, vendors, and customers on financial transactions and questions. Reporting to the Financial Operations Manager, this position plays a key role in maintaining the financial health and integrity of our organization.

Essential Functions

  • Attendance: Regular attendance is an essential function for all employees. We depend on our employees to show up, begin work and end work at the time their schedule indicates and whenever scheduled to work, aside from extenuating circumstances.
  • General Ledger & Transactions: Maintain the general ledger, monitor daily transactions, and apply appropriate accounting treatments.
  • Bank Reconciliations: Reconcile bank accounts monthly, verify deposits, and manage inquiries from banks.
  • Revenue & Receivables: Verify payments from various sources, code and prepare invoices to record revenue, and manage accounts receivable collections.
  • Account Reconciliations: Reconcile cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts.
  • Accounts Payable: Verify and process payment of invoices, ensuring charges are applied to the appropriate accounts, cost centers, and funding sources.
  • Audit Support: Provide assistance to outside auditors by gathering necessary account information and documents for the annual audit.
  • Tax and Compliance: File, reconcile, and pay sales taxes, and maintain compliance with applicable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Purchase Card Management: Manage the purchase card system, ensuring proper tracking and coding of transactions.
  • Support and Guidance: Assist employees, vendors, and customers with transaction support and financial queries, promoting adherence to financial procedures.

Possesses a robust knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, with an advanced skill level in Excel, showcasing the capacity to manage, analyze, and present data effectively.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Competency: Exhibits an exceptional ability to analyze financial data and identify patterns or discrepancies. Utilizes strong problem solving skills to develop practical and innovative solutions to complex financial issues, underpinned by a thorough understanding of accounting principles.
  • Organizational Skills and Attention to Detail: Possesses a high level of organizational competency, enabling the effective management of multiple tasks and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrates an exceptional ability to focus on the minutiae, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of financial data through meticulous attention to detail.
  • Communication Competency: Showcases effective communication abilities, both in written and verbal form. This includes the skill to articulate complex financial information clearly and concisely to stakeholders at all levels of the organization, as well as the ability to listen actively and empathize, facilitating collaborative problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Office in Black Diamond Building 2923 Park Avenue Huntington, WV 25704
  • Coalfield Development operates on a Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule.
  • Given the nature of this role – attendance at events may require work after normal hours.
  • Coalfield allows exempt employees to request & use flextime.

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location and other locations as required. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on employees. A valid driver’s license and annual completion of our drivers safety course is required in order to drive a Coalfield vehicle

Required Experience and Education

  • At least one year of experience in accounting or a related field, with a strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.

Preferred Experience and Education

  • Experience with nonprofit organizations is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred
  • Consideration will also be given to individuals with extensive hands-on experience in accounting or bookkeeping roles, demonstrating a thorough understanding of accounting processes, even without formal education
  • Continuous professional development in accounting standards and technology is highly valued
