WRAPs Partners

WRAPS Partners are community-based nonprofits that replicate elements of Coalfield’s Workforce Readiness and Professional Success (WRAPS) model, expanding workforce training and personal development opportunities for people facing employment barriers. In return, we provide technical and financial support to strengthen their capacity, sustain programming, and create lasting economic impact in communities across Appalachia.

Pitch Contest

Coalfield Development hosted a Pitch Contest at the 2024 Small Communities Big Solutions Conference, where some of our WRAPS Partners were present to share visions for their community’s future. Watch the video to see all pitches.

Empowered Employers

The Empowered Employers Network (EEN) is an initiative led by Coalfield Development with support from regional partner organizations like the American Job Centers, Jobs and Hope WV, Marshall University’s CORE Program, The REACH Initiative, and WV Jobs Network. EEN members are employers who are committed to investing in their workforce and recognize the value of developing their employees both personally and professionally. The network provides access to free training materials, handbooks, and tools to enhance workforce development, along with priority access to qualified candidates. Members also benefit from guidance in navigating workforce support programs such as wage and training reimbursement, as well as connections to social support resources for hiring and employee retention.

People

Our workforce development model is a flexible, multi-level approach designed to engage and develop individuals’ skills, provide access to wraparound services, and support employers. Many training participants face barriers to employment, and we work to break those down so they can grow personally, professionally, and academically. Participants can enter our programming at any point, regardless of their level of experience. Coalfield’s model ensures they have the support and resources needed to succeed in their careers while helping local businesses thrive with a trained, stable workforce.

Places

In close collaboration with local stakeholders, Coalfield Development advances community-based real estate development by transforming vacant and abandoned spaces into renewed, vibrant assets. As a licensed general contractor, we partner with communities to advance mixed-use projects for both residential and commercial purposes, fostering economic diversification and opportunity. Our construction crews receive paid, on-the-job training in modern building techniques while developing personally, professionally, and academically. By restoring purpose to neglected spaces, we help revitalize communities, preserve spaces of historic and cultural significance, and create pathways to quality jobs, affordable housing, and entrepreneurship.

Prosperity

As a licensed general contractor, Coalfield Development can advance bold, creative projects in deep collaboration with the communities we serve. Our projects are designed and ultimately owned by the community. We keep a project pipeline full and advance projects through this pipeline beginning with predevelopment and financing, entering into construction, and then into operation as community assets. Our projects are mixed-use, mixed-income, meaning they blend residential and commercial purposes for a variety of different income demographics, thus also contributing to economic diversification and opportunity cultivation. Our construction crew is also a social enterprise, having 33-6-3 crew members as carpenters. Rejuvenating empty buildings or former mine-lands can be a major strategy for breathing new life into our communities, preserving cultural treasurers, attracting fresh investment, providing opportunities for entrepreneurship and creating quality, affordable housing.
