Building a thriving circular economy in Appalachia, together.

Creating a Community of Reuse

Many Appalachian communities lack access to recycling and upcycling opportunities – we are working to change that. The Appalachian Reuse Hub, a program of Coalfield Development, makes it easy for anyone to reuse, repurpose, repair, and upcycle through our workshops, community events, and marketing of reclaimed materials, offering entrepreneurial opportunities along the way

We are launching a Community Re-Makerspace in Huntington, WV, to provide a space for upcycling, creativity, and community collaboration. Set to be completed by 2027, this space will allow us to transform discarded materials into new products through woodworking, plastic upcycling, 3D printing, sewing, and crafting, creating opportunities for local folks to turn their skills into businesses. Until construction is complete, we are hosting mobile collection events and workshops to support both resourcefulness and entrepreneurship in our community.

Creative Renewal

Our soon-to-be constructed Re-Makerspace will allow us and the community to upcycle from reclaimed materials

Learn, Engage

We host workshops and trainings to educate and inspire community involvement.

Transforming Waste into Value

Unprecedented market conditions, a strong manufacturing sector, and a shared regional goal of revitalizing Appalachia’s economy have created a major opportunity to rethink how materials are managed. The Appalachian ReUse Corridor is bringing together businesses, manufacturers, and local stakeholders to create jobs, reduce waste, and strengthen regional economies through smarter material use.

What We’re Doing:

  • Connecting material generators, collectors, processors, and manufacturers across West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee
  • Reusing, repurposing, and recycling materials like electronics, plastics, metals, cardboard, textiles, household consumerables, and construction and deconstruction debris
  • Using existing road networks (U.S. Highway 52, State Route 2, I-64) to support material logistics
  • Driving economic growth through a circular economy—keeping valuable resources in use longer

This initiative is a significant step toward redefining materials management in our region. By working together, we’re transforming waste into opportunity and building a more diversified, resilient Appalachian economy.
