Creative Placemaking
& West Edge Factory

Weaving together local art, history, and culture to transform spaces into vibrant community hubs, fostering economic growth, social connection, and a deep sense of pride in one’s place.

Since 2009, Coalfield Development has revitalized over 265,000 sq. ft. of formerly dilapidated buildings in rural communities through our workforce development model. Now, we want to lean deeper into these spaces and bring them programmatically to life through an intentional focus of Creative Placemaking. What does this entail? A community and entrepreneur-centered approach to Connect, Collaborate, Create, and Grow.

Connect

• People to their community through reimagined public spaces.
• Artists & entrepreneurs to networks and growth opportunities.
• Creatives to broader markets & business opportunities.
• Blue-collar workers to creative entrepreneurship (woodworking, etc.).
• Cultures through public art projects.
• Our community to the larger arts scene via performances & events.

Collaborate

• With community members – Creating opportunities for active involvement, not just observation.
• With artists – Helping them connect, collaborate, and engage with their communities.
• With arts organizations & businesses – Partnering to achieve shared goals and amplify impact.

Create

• Reimagined public spaces through public art projects and initiatives.
• Community events that bring people together to celebrate and participate in the arts.
• A safer, more beautiful and inspiring community.
• Bonds and support systems for creators.
• Joy!

Grow

• Arts businesses through training and mentorship.
• The reach of local artists by showcasing their work in our gallery and on social media.
• Wealth and stability for makers of all kinds, with opportunities to show and sell their work.

Creative placemaking at our flagship location, West Edge Factory, and other Coalfield programming have supported 91 entrepreneurs and artists through programs in business development and art medium utilization. We’re excited to replicate this model and revitalize sites throughout West Virginia!

West Edge Factory: A Hub for Innovation,
Creativity, and Community

West Edge Factory is a dynamic community space where enterprise, artistry, and workforce development come together to build a stronger Appalachia. Originally built in the 1930s as a manufacturing site for cast iron and ceramic heaters, the factory later became home to Corbin, LLC, a Brooklyn-based clothing company that once employed over 1,000 workers. After the plant closed in 2002, the building sat vacant for nearly a decade—until Coalfield Development saw its potential and reimagined it as a hub for social enterprises, job training, and creative collaboration.

West Edge Factory is a place where ideas take shape, skills are built, and creativity thrives. Whether you’re here to work, learn, create, or celebrate, you’re part of a movement redefining what’s possible in Appalachia. Visit us and see where cool stuff happens every day!
