“Blue Thistle Fibers has already begun addressing WV's fiber-related challenges - lack of infrastructure and resources for wool processing - by acquiring a brick-and-mortar studio space and forging partnerships with established fiber mills to expand production capacity.”
Clare Loftus is a native of Huntington, West Virginia, and a U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduate and former Coast Guard officer. After returning to West Virginia in 2024, Clare launched Blue Thistle Fibers, a naturally dyed yarn and fiber company operating in Fayette County. Her goal is to revitalize the state’s wool and fiber economy by expanding local processing capacity, providing workforce training, and offering small-batch manufacturing alongside agritourism experiences such as fiber arts workshops.
Clare’s space in Gauley Bridge also features a yoga studio and café, serving both the local community and tourists. Drawing on her military leadership experience and perseverance, she has built her business from the ground up, navigating challenges and adapting in order to grow. Through Blue Thistle Fibers, Clare is creating opportunities for local artisans, strengthening West Virginia’s textile infrastructure, and fostering a renewed appreciation for quality, handmade, locally produced fiber goods.
