POSITION SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE

The Staff Accountant will prepare and maintain financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, and other related financial activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains the general ledger. Monitors daily transactions; determines and applies appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
  • Verifies and/or completes payments from customers, tenants, donors, grantors and other sources. Codes and prepares invoices to record revenue and accounts receivable.
  • Reconciles cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manages accounts receivable collections.
  • Verifies and/or completes payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensure payments are charged to the appropriate accounts, cost centers, and funding sources.
  • Provides outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit.
  • Files, reconciles, and pays sales taxes.
  • Manages the purchase card system, tracks down receipts, and codes transactions.
  • Assists employees, vendors, and customers with transaction support, frequently asked financial questions, and following financial procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Competency - knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

     

  • Knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting.

  • Understanding of the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, or similar software, and accounting software.

Work Location and Hours of Work

  • Coalfield offices are currently located in Huntington and Charleston, WV. The chosen candidate must have reliable transportation to regularly attend work at the office and other locations, as required.

  • Some travel is required to meetings and to facilitate relationships with existing and potential partners.

  • The normal work week is Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

  • To support work/life balance and optimize use of office space, this role may be permitted to work from home/work remotely when properly requested and approved. Applicants should expect to spend five days per week in the office during the first 90 days of employment.

Environment Conditions, Physical Activity, Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on employees. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.

  • At least two years of related experience required.
