POSITION SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE

The Resource Navigation Coach will be a person who enjoys social interaction and is motivated by working with various types of people to model curiosity and problem solving in pursuit of stabilization and well-being. This person will actively engage with Coalfield Development’s crew members and WRAPS trainees to provide targeted support as they journey through objectively thinking about their strengths and needs and setting milestones and actions steps to overcome barriers the to successful employment at Coalfield and beyond.

Essential Functions

  • Regular attendance is an essential function for all employees. We depend on our employees to show up, begin work and end work at the time their schedule indicates and whenever scheduled to work, aside from extenuating circumstances.
  • Resource Navigation Coaches will use diagnostic skills, problem-solving, facilitation and deep listening to coach Coalfield’s “On the Job Training” (OJT) employees who are navigating barriers to employment. Coaches will deeply engage with employees and facilitate their creation of SMAART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Aggressive, Relevant, Time-bound) Milestones that the OJT employee owns and executes (for example: Driver’s License Reinstatement within 3 months). Coaches will facilitate regular review meetings and co-develop clear action items with OJT employees.
  • Milestones should be grounded in basic needs, successful employment, developing capacity to build wealth, and realizing a lifestyle that promotes well-being.
  •  Resource Navigation Coaches will physically and remotely meet with each OJT employees in the following manner:
    – A portion of onboarding, including initial milestone setting via a facilitated conversation and strengths and needs survey.
    – Check-ins – 2-10 minutes, once a week, via text, call, or in-person
    – Milestone Setting & Reviews – Up to 30 minutes, every 2 weeks, scheduled, in-person
    – Working Sessions – no more than 2 a week, to work on professional development, preparing for transition, or discussing barriers or milestones. May be more at times. Working Sessions may involve transporting the employee to locations (DMV, DHHR, Bank, Etc.) and going through the process alongside them to model problem solving, diagnostic skills, and provide a sounding board and co-regulation.
    – Coaching Sessions – to triage and coach through a specific issue, as needed.
    – Wellbeing Surveys – to be completed by OJT employees but introduced, facilitated, and used as a reflection prompt and milestone setting tool with the Resource Navigation Coach.
  • Resource Navigation Coaches must use the above-mentioned to create moments of deep engagement with OJT employees to help them uncover the strengths, passions, and resources they possess, and listen with the focus of evoking and supporting hopes and ideas of change which will support that employee’s growth. They must always remain in a posture of “Do-with” rather than “Do-for,” and must be focused on allowing OJT employees to realize their own agency and exercise autonomy.
  • Resource Navigation Coaches must be able to navigate moments of intense emotion (both employee’s and their own) with Coalfield’s values of Gumption, Grit, and Grace. Coaches must be able to regulate themselves and have a good understanding of their own barriers, biases, boundaries, and cultural backgrounds, and how these impact our views and interactions. They must be able to accurately identify traps, traumas, and triggers that OJT employees, supervisors, or they, themselves, are falling into, and maintain an objective and focused approach to supporting individuals as they navigate their own growth and change.
  • Resource Navigation Coaches will proactively and intentionally model coaching, mentoring, active listening, and advocacy techniques when interacting with crew chiefs and other personnel within Coalfield.
  •  Resource Navigation Coaches will implement tactical and tangible support to OJT employees where necessary, including but not limited to:
    – In person meetings and working sessions in a range or work sites and settings, from farming sites to Construction zones.
    – Transportation to partner agencies, courthouses, hearings, the DMV, etc.
    – Guidance and support in developing clear and effective budgets
    – Help making difficult phone calls or starting multi-step processes (license fines, making an appointment to see a counselor, unresolved health issues, checking credit scores, getting on payment plans for debts, etc.)
    – Assisting with the navigation of online applications for support like legal

Work Location and Hours of Work

  • Office in Black Diamond Building 2923 Park Avenue Huntington, WV 25704
  • This position will meet with employees and partners throughout Cabell, Wayne and Kanawha Counties and other counties as assigned.
  • Coalfield Development operates on a Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule. This position will work that schedule.
  • Given the nature of this role – attendance at events may require work after normal hours.
  • Coalfield allows exempt employees to request & use flextime.

Environment Conditions, Physical Activity, Physical Demands

  • Occasionally when visiting project sites: Low temperatures. High temperatures. Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind. Noisy environments.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 25 pounds

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid driver’s license to travel often to 21 county service regions.

 

Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on OJT employees. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures.

Required Experience and Education

  • Associate degree or higher in a social services or human relations field (other fields can be relevant as well, depending on focus and experience)
  • Professional or personal experience working with individuals experiencing employment or social barriers to meeting one’s full potential, power and purpose

Preferred Experience and Education

  • Two+ years of experience in social service field, or comparable fields that provide context and familiarity with walking with people through the navigation of barriers, systems, and milestones.
