The Financial Reporting Accountant will prepare the internal and external financial reports of the organization, perform the accounting for its grants, and test its transactions to ensure a clean audit.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with internal teams, external auditors, and accountants to provide needed information for the annual audit and IRS Form 990
  • Prepare internal financial reports for the Board of Directors, Executive Team, grantors, and managers with a focus on demonstrating compliance with grantor requirements, managing the funds available, and explaining actual versus planned expenses
  • Complete the monthly and annual financial close. Prepare reconciling workpapers for balance sheet accounts. Record adjusting journal entries for accruals, deferrals, grants, revenue recognition, depreciation, payroll, reclassifications, error corrections, etc.
  • Detect, prevent, and correct errors, mistakes, omissions, and misstatements to ensure financial information is complete and accurate throughout the organization
  • Maintain depreciation and fixed asset schedules
  • Maintain and reconcile schedules of loans, amortization, and interest expense
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or higher
  • 3+ years of experience in the field of accounting, financial auditing, or not-for-profit financial management
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred
  • Experience working with small businesses and social enterprises preferred
  • Federal grants experience preferred

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Preparation of financial statements and accompanying note disclosures in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Preparation of IRS Form 990 for nonprofit organizations in accordance with the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and form instructions
  • Financial administration of federal awards in accordance with 2 CFR 200 Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards
  • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office software
  • Preparation of supporting schedules, reconciliations, workpapers, business memos, and similar materials necessary for financial reporting to be regarded as compliant, effective, and trustworthy
  • Comfortable and experienced working in a technology-driven work environment: typing, internet research, online account and password management, learning new software and technologies, digital file and content management, computerized workflows and accounting processes
  • Excellent analytical, technical, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Analysis, presentation, and visualization of financial data and information
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Patient and compassionate with people and challenges encountered in challenging socio-economic environments

SUPERVISION

The Financial Reporting Accountant reports to the Chief Financial Officer and does not supervise other employees.

WORK LOCATION, NORMAL WORKING HOURS, AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

This is not a remote position. Candidates must have reliable transportation to our offices located in Huntington, WV.

The Finance Team embraces a hybrid work environment where some days are spent in the office and others are spent working remotely. We pride ourselves on offering workplace and scheduling flexibility to the Finance Team, and we also expect in-person attendance for certain pre-scheduled meetings, events, and work sessions.

The position requires prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to life up to 15 pounds at times.

Must be able to move around the office and get to the equipment and filing cabinets.

Must work a full 40 hours per week unless you are utilizing paid or unpaid leave in accordance with Coalfield’s policies.

The normal workweek is Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM. Attendance at certain meetings, events, or work sessions within these times is required.

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS

This is mainly an office job, but occasional travel within Appalachia is required. Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on employees. Travel expenses, excluding commutes, are reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures.
