POSITION SUMMARY

The Financial Accountant will prepare Coalfield’s financial reports and work with managers to ensure grant funds are handled with professional care. This is a challenging role that requires excellent analysis, problem-solving, and communication skills. In addition, your accounting skills will need to be sharp and ready for audit. You’ll work closely with our Staff Accountants, whose roles are designed to complement yours. Staff Accountants handle transactions and data entry, and this becomes the material for the Financial Accountant to prepare reports and share business insights. The Financial Accountant can advance by hitting reporting deadlines, providing valuable business insights, and bringing home a clean audit with no findings. By fulfilling this role, our CFO will be able to graduate from scorekeeper to business partner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with internal teams, external auditors, and accountants to provide needed information for the annual audit and IRS Form 990
  • Prepare financial reports for management and grantors
  • Work collaboratively with managers to identify and allocate costs to each grant
  • Periodically reconcile balance sheet accounts and record appropriate adjustments
  • Detect, prevent, and correct errors, omissions, and misstatements to ensure financial information is complete and accurate
  • Maintain depreciation and fixed asset schedules
  • Maintain and reconcile schedules of loans, amortization, and interest expense
  • Assist CFO with development of budgets and forecasts
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet at least one of the following requirements to be considered:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or higher
  • 2+ years of experience in the field of accounting, financial auditing, or not-for-profit financial management
  • Demonstrated progress toward becoming a Certified Public Accountant

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - PREFERENCES

Coalfield will give preference to candidates who possess the following credentials, skills, or experience:

  • Certified Public Accountant credential
  • Experience working with small businesses, social enterprises, or not-for-profit organizations
  • Grant management experience

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Preparation of financial statements and accompanying note disclosures in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Internal financial reporting to business leaders
  • Basic accounting functions: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, transaction entry, journal entries, bank reconciliations, chart of accounts maintenance, etc.
  • Proficient with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office software, especially Excel
  • Proficient with common office equipment and services such as computers, the Internet, email, shared calendars, file sharing services, printers, scanners, remote meetings, management of accounts and passwords, etc.
  • Ability to type at least 40 words per minute
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal, nonverbal, written, oral, visual, listening, etc.
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Patient and compassionate with people and challenges encountered in challenging socio-economic environments

SUPERVISION

The Financial Accountant position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and does not supervise other employees.

LOCATION REQUIREMENT

Candidates must reside within the Appalachian Region to be considered. Appalachia is made up of 423 counties across 13 states and spans 206,000 square miles from southern New York to northern Mississippi.

WORKING HOURS, REMOTE WORK, AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Coalfield maintains a physical office in Huntington, WV. Candidates who desire working in a more traditional in-person office environment are welcome to apply. We decided to allow both in-person and remote workers to apply to be more inclusive.

This position can be worked remotely except that physical attendance is required for one day once every three months. Coalfield hosts special training and socialization events for its employees and requires in-person attendance at these functions at least four times per year. Coalfield will fully reimburse or pay for the cost of mandatory work-related travel.

This position must work 40 hours per week unless utilizing paid or unpaid leave in accordance with Coalfield’s policies.

The normal workweek is Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM, Eastern Standard Time. Remote attendance at certain pre-scheduled meetings or events is required during these times. The work schedule can be flexibly adjusted outside of normal working hours if pre-scheduled time commitments are not displaced.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT AND REQUIREMENTS

  • The position requires prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Must be able to move around an office and use common office equipment
