POSITION SUMMARY

Coalfield Development seeks a Director of Revitalize Appalachia who fulfills three main functions:

  1. Ensure day-to-day operational success and strategic management for a large team working across real estate development, construction, and property management.
  2. Lead team and supervise key staff in managing projects, workload and schedule prioritization, budget development, and coordination with other departments / teams within the organization – including Executive, Finance, Development, and Operations.
  3. Support and effectively balance the priorities inherent to an employment-based social enterprise: with a triple bottom line focus of people, planet, and profit.

 

As the Director of Revitalize Appalachia, a typical day might include the following:

  • Supporting a culture of problem-solving and collaboration across multiple teams, project types, and geographic locations (Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, and Mingo counties). 
  • Collaborating with the Associate Director of Revitalize Appalachia to lead and supervise team initiatives as-needed. 
  • Working with Crew Chiefs and the Development Team to support Coalfield’s workforce training / development for individuals facing barriers to employment. 
  • Meeting with project managers to ensure prioritization of tasks and schedules, while supporting efficient workflows and processes.  
  • Regular review of timesheets, evaluations, work logs, and other staff-related documents
  • Communicating and coordinating with other team or Executive leaders, including: the CEO, COO, CFO, and CDO, along with the Director of Employee Development.
  • Leading, or participating in, team and organization-wide meetings. 
  • Communicating with key project and team partners

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support critical functions of the Revitalize Appalachia mission as a social enterprise. Namely- oversee work that adheres to a triple bottom line of people, profit and planet.
  • Ability to lead, manage and influence across organizations at different levels. Be knowledgeable of and comply with all company policies and procedures, as well as legal requirements, at all times.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Revitalize Appalachia: ownership of the entire property life cycle beginning with site selection through facility delivery and maintenance.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Revitalize Appalachia: development, management and maintenance of Coalfield’s 12+ property real estate portfolio across four counties in southern West Virginia.
  • Assists with partnership coordination, including developing outreach materials, planning and implementing partnership strategies, and representing Coalfield at partnership and networking events.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment with multiple projects, locations, businesses and collaborative partners.
  • Kind and professional demeanor and attitude. Must be patient and compassionate with people and issues encountered in challenging socio-economic environments. Must understand and adopt Coalfield’s theory of change and value system. 
  • A willingness to learn, an ability to problem-solve and work independently are crucial.
  • Excellent at time management, task prioritization, and organization.
  • Excellent professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with computers, email, Microsoft Office, Google applications and standard office equipment (phone, copier/printer, scanners, etc.).
  • Familiarity with facilities regulations and requirements, including ADA and Fair Housing
  • Familiarity with the real estate development process- including funding and financing strategies, public review, and grant management / compliance
  • Familiarity with construction workflows and industry standards, including IBC.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree required; masters degree preferred. 
  • Five plus years of experience in a job or jobs that require high levels of interaction, facilitation, and team leadership.

SUPERVISION

The Director of Revitalize Appalachia reports to the Chief Operating Officer but is also expected to work with minimal supervision and respond to the needs of the Executive Team and Board of Directors. In collaboration with the Associated Director, the Director will directly supervise (2) project managers and (3) onsite construction team leads (crew chiefs).

WORK LOCATION, HOURS OF WORK, AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Coalfield’s offices are currently located in Wayne, Morgantown, Huntington, and Charleston, WV. Revitalize Appalachia has project sites currently located in Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln and Mingo Counties. The chosen candidate must have reliable transportation to regularly attend work at the Huntington office and other locations, as required.

  • Due to Public Health guidelines remote work remains in effect, organization wide.
  • Occasional on-site work environment and visits may occur. 
  • Extensive computer operation.
  • Light lifting (up to 25 LBS with or without accommodation).
  • Must be able to drive and work seated or standing at a desk and/or computer.
  • The normal work week is Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Coalfield allows managers and employees to negotiate a flexible work schedule. Uncompensated overtime is infrequently required when necessary to meet critical deadlines or respond to emergencies.

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and may elect to permanently assign a vehicle to the Director. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures.
