POSITION SUMMARY

The Construction Crew Chief is a position that combines oversight of construction activity on the project job site with supervision and mentorship of participants in Coalfield’s on-the-job training programs (called WRAPS trainees and Crew Members). Revitalize Appalachia is the team within Coalfield Development responsible for projects that involve real estate development, construction, and property management.

The Construction Crew Chief will work in close coordination with members of the Revitalize Appalachia team – including the Construction Project Manager, the Property / Building Manager, and Directors to execute construction projects on time and on-budget. The Construction Crew Chief will also work in partnership with the Development Team to support WRAPS trainees and Crew Members in their personal, professional, and academic development.

As a Crew Chief at Coalfield Development a typical day might include the following:

  • Meet with Trainees, Crew Members and other crew personnel to conduct Toolbox Talks: safety topic debrief, prepare for the day’s activities, check in on attitudes, and set expectations
  • Prepare the onsite work and training
  • Meet with Trainees and Crew Members individually to make sure they are progressing towards goals, and/or provide structured coaching and discipline
  • Arrange transportation and logistics to move trainees to various worksites or training locations.
  • Communicate with vendors or partners regarding needs of projects or planned work

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee and execute onsite construction activity – including physical / manual construction tasks as dictated by the project, as well as close supervision of the work performed by trainees and crew members.
  • Ensure that daily work and onsite activities are conducted safely, with the minimum interference / inconvenience for building tenants and employees located onsite.
  • Serve as a point of contact for working with external contractors and subcontractors, and communicating with vendors and suppliers.
  • Serve as Supervisor/Mentor to WRAPS Trainees and 33-6-3 Crew Members to ensure they experience a combination of on-the-job training, professional certificate training and mentorship for 33 hours per week; work beside the trainee to model good work ethics, mentor while doing and identify opportunities for growth and learning
  • Lead personal and professional development using provided curriculum for an additional 3 hours/week
  • Actively coordinate training, work and personal development with Director of Enterprise or Program; Senior Director of Human Development; Professional & Academic Development Coordinator; Personal Development Coordinator; and others to ensure smooth communication and scheduling
  • Ensure engagement in in-depth mentorship to help Trainees and Crew Members overcome specific barriers to long-term employment success
  • Ensure an additional 3 hours/week is spent pursuing personal development that is a combination of Personal Development Journal work, Financial Literacy, and “Week Three” activities, depending on the week.
  • Coordinate schedules to accommodate a minimum of 6 hours of course work per/week for Crew Members to pursue higher education and/or certification attainment.
  • Hold Trainees and Crew Members accountable for meeting expectations including attendance; uphold and administer policies and procedures; respond to organizational data collection efforts.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to work in elevated locations – including from scaffolding.
  • Knowledge in finishes work – including cabinets, casework, trimwork and flooring
  • Ability to install and/or repair interior and exterior doors, windows.
  • Equipment Maintenance – Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Equipment Selection – Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.


Resource Management Skills

  • Management of Material Resources – Obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.
  • Management of Personnel Resources – Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position reports to the Revitalize Director and Associate Director, and works with limited daily supervision. The Crew Chief will oversee the activities of a group of two to five Trainees and Crew Members.

WORK LOCATION AND HOURS OF WORK

Revitalize Appalachia currently has a number of construction-related projects in the Westmoreland community of Huntington – which will be the work location for this Crew Chief position.

  • Primarily on-site environment.
  • The normal work week is Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Uncompensated overtime is infrequently required when necessary to meet critical deadlines or respond to emergencies.
  • The chosen candidate must have reliable transportation to regularly attend work at their assigned location and other locations, as required.

ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Very heavy work (up to 100 LBS with or without accommodation)
  • Must be able to move around the sites, climb a ladder, climb scaffolding, and work in confined or tight conditions as needed.
  • Climbing, lifting, carrying, bending and twisting and operating heavy equipment and hand-tools
  • Must be able to drive and work seated or standing at a desk and/or computer.
  • Onsite conditions can include both low temperature and high temperatures. Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind may be present, as well as noisy environments.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on employees. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Minimum five (5) years working in general construction and/or associated trades, with supervisory responsibilities
