POSITION SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE

Coalfield Development Agriculture Internship is a position that will work with our Agriculture program, Refresh Appalachia. This position will assist the Senor Director of Agriculture with general administrative tasks and organizing community trainings. This work will be supervised by the Senior Director of Agriculture with work plans subject to  change as new grants are awarded.  

 

Expectations for this position: 

  • Training and outreach:. A primary focus will be the planning, development, coordination, and facilitation of our l community-based agriculture trainings. Trainings will be directed towards various groups including consumers, backyard gardeners, school-aged groups, and for- profit production-scale producers. We have strong partnerships with several statewide organizations and nonprofits who will play the lead role in delivering the majority of these training sessions. The Agriculture Support Intern will play a lead role in working with schools to set up tasting and in class activities the educate about local agriculture. 
  • Adminstrative Assitance. Help the Refresh team with scheduling, email reminders, note taking during meetings, organizing files, organizing photos and marketing material, and attending events and meetings on behalf of the program. Assist with finding and applying for grants for Refresh Appalachia as directed by supervisor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate and facilitate community outreach, trainings, and educational events around farming and local food  
  • Market, promote, and recruit participants for trainings, education, volunteer, and outreach events 
  • Prepare agendas and schedules for meetings  
  • Perform routine document collection and submission for grant and program reports 
  • Communicate with supervisor and colleagues regularly via Microsoft Outlook, phone calls and text messaging 
  • Schedule and attend meetings on behalf of agriculture team, taking notes and recording minutes   
  • Assist the Director with scheduling and calendaring.Assist with finding and applying for grants for Refresh Appalachia as directed by supervisor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will not have supervisory requirements. 

Work Location and Hours of Work

  • 1040 Vernon Street, Huntington, WV 25704 will be the primary reporting location with variable work hours throughout the week (no more than 20 hours per week) with most work days being 8am to 5pm.  

Environment Conditions, Physical Activity, Physical Demands

  • Be able to work in various weather conditions outdoors with low winter temperatures to high summer temperatures. 
  • Some duties are performed in the warehouse and will require work to be done in varying climates. Temperatures range from zero in the coolers to 95 degrees Fahrenheit or above outdoors while on routes.  
  • Stand for extended periods. 

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must provide reliable transportation to their primary work location. Coalfield has a limited fleet of vehicles and frequently carpools to minimize travel burdens on employees. Travel expenses (excluding commutes) may be reimbursed per Coalfield’s policies and procedures. 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Proficient with computers, email, Microsoft applications, and messaging apps. 
  • Proficient with standard office equipment (phone system, copier/printer, scanners, etc.) 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued by a state authority.  

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Some experience with food safety and safe food handling  
  • Knowledge of the agriculture and the environment preferred but not required
