Hometown: Doddridge County, WV
Dana was raised along the Middle Island Creek in Doddridge County, where she was an old soul, a tomboy, a dedicated scholar-athlete, an avid reader, and a tamer of stray cats. She has a BSW and a JD from WVU, along with an MFA from the University of Wyoming. She’s a member of the West Virginia State Bar and has worked as a litigation attorney, judicial law clerk, family court mediator, appellate brief writer, college English instructor, test prep instructor, professional tutor, and freelance business and technical writer. She’s also a certified personal trainer and has co-owned a successful bicycle retail business. Dana spent over a decade in the American West. She visited many interesting places, met plenty of amazing people, and adopted some great dogs.
Now, she’s back in the Mountain State with her favorite mutt, Cosmo, and she’s grateful to be leading the team of creative, generous, hardworking, fun-loving people who make up Rediscover Appalachia.
Greatest Achievements: (1) standing by a hummingbird feeder for many hours over many days until a hummingbird landed on the back of her hand; (2) being a decent hurdler even though she had to take four steps between hurdles instead of the usual three; and (3) finishing a mountain bike race by carrying her bike more than she rode it.
Favorite Movie Quote: “There is no normal life…There’s just life.” – Doc in Tombstone
Favorite Book Quote: “There’s zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas.” – Susan Cain, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking
Personal Hero: Mamaw Romaine, once described as “the perfect combination of chocolate chip cookies and attitude.” A lot of people seem to think you can’t be tough and kind, but that simply isn’t true. She was the perfect example of how to be both.
Most Interesting Place Ever Visited: Santa Fe and New Orleans are tied.
